The Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen is the most popular park in Almaty. It was founded in the 1870s instead of the Cossack cemetery, therefore initially it was the Old Cemetery Park. The park is a green area of 18 hectares separated with straight paths and alleys with a mix of deciduous trees, such as old oaks, elms, aspens, maples, poplars, pines and spruces.

The park had changed its name many times for the years of its existence, until it was finally renamed in 1942 in honour of the Panfilov guardsmen from 1075 regiment 316 rifle division, who held German attack with few people on the way to Moscow in November 1941.

The Abay State Opera and Ballet Theater (GATOB) was founded in 1934. Just five years later it got the status of an academic theater. The name of the great Kazakh cultural figure Kunanbayev was assigned to the theater in 1945 dedicated to the 100th birthday anniversary of the poet.

The modern Abay Theater is the main stage of the country. This is one of the most beautiful and famous buildings in the city. The Almaty GATOB repertoire includes the following:

  • opera performances;
  • classical plays;
  • dramatic performances;
  • performance of ballet companies;
  • musical concerts;

The Central Park of Culture and Leisure is situated in Medeusky District of Almaty. The park was founded in 1856 by horticulturist Krishtopenko and was called the Public Garden. The park was the place for walks and for Verny garrison officers.

In 1934, the park was renovated; recreation centers were situated for workers of Alma-Ata and amusements were installed on the banks of the deepened pond.

There are amusement rides for kids, a railway for kids, indoor and outdoor waterparks, sports grounds, stations for boat and catamaran rent, various cafés, a dinopark in the park.

The Kok Tobe Park is one of the symbols of Almaty and entire Kazakhstan situated on the top of Kok Tobe Mount 1,100 meters above the sea level, 5-minute drive far from the city center.

This park has been a popular place with Almaty citizens and visitors since its opening date. The unique complex with restaurants and cafés, cozy alleys and unparalleled nature has become the brightest sight of Almaty where many people would like to spend their leisure time and enjoy the city with a bird’s eye view

The works to fortify the slopes and renovate the Kok Tobe Park started in summer 2005. During renovation all utilities were replaced, access ways were covered with asphalt, the trees were planted on the mountain, and all infrastructure facilities were repaired.
